We have a small amount of UGX for the first day! The next major town on our itinerary is Fort Portal. As our package isn't fully pre-paid, we would like to try get the best exchange rates possible. Just check a couple and you will find they don't vary much to worry about. You will get a "better" rate by exchanging large denomination clean notes of recent issue.
Bicco Forex bureau at col ville street plot 1 communication house ground floor shop number 2 they open at 8: ATMs will give you shillings at a pretty low fee, all over the country now. Try to avoid Mastercard, use VisaDebit cards instead.
Useful as a back-up, but ensure your bank is aware you are travelling here before you leave. The Forex in Garden City, and the new one in Forest Mall Lugogo, will negotiate with you, if you quote a particular rate, and request what you want, as my friend suggests in Jinja. Cross-posted, whilst I was out in the sunshine ; yes no trouble at all changing sterling.
You have plenty of options! I think there are large banks in Fort Portal like Stanbic and Standard Chartered, they will help you out. Thank you Shelly, that's really helpful as we are in Jinja first, for a couple of days so wanted to avoid having to stop in Kampala on route from entebbe, nor wait until we get to Kampala on day 4! We've only 1 day there so don't want it wasted sitting in forex booths! Didn't realize it would be possible to haggle on the rate!
PS Shelly - what's the weather like? PPS hope this doesn't come across patronizing, but as we are a large group we were hoping to be able to bring extra luggage - good quality clothes to donate to orphanages.
Would that be welcomed? I have so much summer uniform donated from a boys prep school. We've been having slightly overcast early mornings in Kampala, getting very hot indeed and very burny was 28 oC in the shade at 11 am , and then we had some threatening clouds poured at that time yesterday. Not much rain for the rainy season though. And of course, the weather will vary wherever you are in the country!
Where is the coolest place you are going? Clothes - I suggest you contact Hannah Small at Soft Power in Jinja, and ask her if this is of use to the schools they support. And how many sets? Let her know that information. Nice idea, but it needs to be useful and get to the people who need it most.
And you can off-load it quickly too. I'll definitely contact Hannah and get her advice, so thank you so much for the lead! And Jinja would be ideal, so we can drop off as soon as we arrive. England has been miserable so far! We are Ugandan asians, having left in Yes, your far west and up into the hills will be the coolest.
I remember you telling us -about the family. I have a friend who's family owned a tea plantation out there but had to leave it all behind at that time. Your family will see an incredible difference, especially with retail in Kampala - that sector has grown dramatically in the last 2 years. Construction everywhere - you will see plenty of beauty though! All of your saved places can be found here in My Trips.
